Typewriter EDU is available via Marktplatz Lernapps run by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education for lower and upper secondary schools.
Marktplatz Lernapps: making digital learning easy
A new e-learning offer for schools in Austria starts in the summer term 2025/26 with Marktplatz Lernapps. The goal of this Federal Ministry of Education (BMB) initiative is to make digital learning software centrally, transparently and free of charge available for teaching. Through the platform, schools get low-barrier access to pedagogically reviewed learning apps to support modern, individualised teaching. To this end, every school in lower and upper secondary education is given an additional budget per student. Find more information for schools on the OeAD page.

Who can participate?
Participation is open to all general-education and vocational schools in lower and upper secondary education that hold a legally recognised school-type designation. Vocational schools (Berufsschulen) are excluded — they have their own offerings. Participation in the pilot is voluntary: schools decide for themselves whether to register as an “early adopter”.
How does participation work?
- Register as an early adopter Schools register on the Marktplatz Lernapps platform between 26 January and 27 March 2026. School leadership performs the registration via the Bildungsportal. Teachers can then be enabled through the Bildungsportal to place orders.
- Catalogue, selection and ordering The digital catalogue is publicly viewable from 23 February 2026. Teachers and school leadership can choose from a wide range of quality-reviewed learning apps. The ordering window also runs until 27 March 2026. The school budget is shown in the digital basket and is adjusted automatically after every selection.
- Licence provisioning and trial phase After the order is placed, providers usually deliver the licences within a few working days. Schools then have a 14-day trial phase in which cancellation is possible. After that phase the licences remain valid until 31 August 2026 (semester licence).
- No cost to schools Participation in and use of the learning apps is free of charge for schools. Billing happens between the providers and the OeAD; no additional financial burden falls on the school. More information for schools on the OeAD page.
Why is the marketplace relevant?
Marktplatz Lernapps bundles digital learning resources that have gone through a pedagogical quality review and meet technical and data-protection requirements. It makes it easier for teachers to pick suitable digital tools, saves administrative effort and supports modern teaching. At the same time it complements existing initiatives for digital education in Austria. Typewriter was awarded the Lörnie Award by the bm:bwk (now BMB) in 2004, was certified in Austria in 2023 as a Quality-Sealed App, and can be procured either through the Schulbuchaktion as a freely chosen teaching aid (UEW) in the Typewriter PLUS version or through Marktplatz Lernapps as Typewriter EDU.

After a successful evaluation, regular operation is planned from the 2026/27 school year.
The school allocation — how is it funded?
A subsidy of EUR 13 is available per student. The calculation basis is student numbers as per BilDok 2024/25.
This yields a school-wide budget (allocation) that is visible in the basket, decreases automatically after each order and can be used at the school’s discretion.
The ordering process in detail for Typewriter EDU
- You select Typewriter EDU for the digital basket and order the corresponding licences for each class.
- Within 5 days your class is created and you receive the access details as the teacher.
- You can add any number of additional teachers to your class.
- Teacher accounts are always free.
Feature set
- The class licence of Typewriter EDU offers the same feature set as a Typewriter PLUS version. Only the school administration is missing.
